Chapter eighteen

Haven

The moment the clock turned over to 9 a.m., Haven jumped out of her car and practically ran to the front door of the institution. When Haven walked in, it surprised the usual staff behind the window to see her. She almost never visited this early during the week, most often than not Haven was an evening visitor.

“Good morning, here to see your grandmother?” the nurse at the desk asked her as she walked up. Haven could go one of two ways here, she could say she was there to see Betty, only to wander the halls once she gained access, or she could tell the truth and hope she had enough pull to gain access to a stranger.

“Yes, I had the morning off and figured I could use more time with her.” Haven responded, lying through her teeth. The nurse didn’t think anything of it and gave her access. As Haven was walking through the halls she was trying to nonchalantly look into different rooms, looking to see if she could find Nova. But by the time she was outside of her grandmother’s room she still hadn’t had any luck. Taking a quick look around Haven couldn’t see anyone really paying her any attention, so she went down the next hallway, hoping some kind of sign would just appear to help her out.

Just as she was peeking into yet another room, a voice surprised her from behind.

“Excuse me, what do you think you’re doing?” Haven jumped around to find the head nurse for the floor staring at her with a look that told her she had one shot with her excuse before she was getting kicked out.

“Oh, hi. Sorry, I was, uh, just looking for the … bathroom?” Haven internally cringed at how pathetic she sounded. She couldn’t come up with anything better than looking for a bathroom? Every nurse on this floor knew her face and how often she came, did she really think the bathroom excuse was going to work?

The nurse crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow at Haven. The gig was up, there was no point in lying anymore. Haven took a deep breath and prayed that this nurse was at least somewhat reasonable.

“Okay, yeah. Lame excuse. Okay, here’s the truth. I was looking for someone that’s new here. I don’t have her name, but I saw her the other day, and I just wanted to see if she was ok.”

“Anyone new to the institution needs to have their visitors registered at the front, you know this. Snooping around random rooms is a big confidentiality breech. We expect you to know better, given how often you’re here visiting Betty.” Haven felt like she was a teenager again, being scolded for breaking curfew.

“I know, and normally I have nothing but respect for the rules, especially here where you take such good care of my grandmother. But …” The nurse rolled her eyes.

“But you were hoping just this one time we could break the rules because
